EVIDENCE IN SUPPORT OF PIPS

  • Possessed kinship terms are marked with possessive prefixes. Possessed nouns can be otherwise marked with a prefix indicating that a possessive relation is alienable.
  • Since expression of the possessor itself as a pronoun on noun phrase is optional, possession may be indicated by nominal morphology alone.
  • Prominent possessors appear to occupy the same syntactic position as other possessors within the NP.
  • Evidence for the internal status of possessors comes from adnominal absolute case-marking on the possessor.
